Volunteers.
St John volunteers come from all walks of life. Through their shared dedication and professionalism they save the lives of many people each year, and ease the pain of thousands more.
St John volunteers are readily mobilised to provide first aid as part of the State Disaster Plan - working alongside the other emergency services during bushfires and floods.
Generally however, you will find St John at sporting events, concerts and large public gatherings providing skilled and caring first aid and sometimes saving lives.
But the demands of running St John's volunteer programs are high and funding is always needed: for uniforms, transport and first aid supplies; life-saving oxygen and analgesic gas equipment; for Heartstart defibrillators; for community care volunteer training programs.
St John Trainer Saves A Life
Another example of how outstanding St John people are! Who would have thought that such an everyday task such as putting petrol in your car, could turn into a major medical emergency. This is the situation Harry, a St John First Aid trainer and volunteer, found himself in when he saved the life of an elderly lady, Mrs R.
After celebrating her sister's birthday at a lunch, Mrs R pulled into the Tip Top Servo to get petrol. Noticing something was wrong, and knowing of Mrs R's heart condition, sister Judith knew action was needed. Always alert, Harry was on the scene within seconds. |
