St John Ambulance SA is a charity that has been supporting the wellbeing of South Australians for 140 years. We help tens of thousands of people across the state each year through the delivery of health and medical services at events, first aid training and products, and social inclusion programs.

Our Governance

How we are governed.

St John Ambulance SA is governed by a Board of Directors, which is responsible to members for the performance of the Company. The Board's focus is to ensure St John SA is appropriately managed and continues to provide leading first aid, health and medical services, and community services consistent with the culture and values of the Order of St John.

The Board draws on relevant corporate governance principles and practices to support the performance of St John SA. Day-to-day management of the organisation and the implementation of corporate strategy and policy initiatives are delegated to the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Management team.

Corporate Governance Standards

The Board works to the One St John Corporate Governance Standards. These standards require that:

  1. Board and management roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and separated.
  2. The Board has processes in place for determining strategic direction.
  3. The Board has processes in place to monitor progress, including reporting against performance measures.
  4. The Board has systems in place for ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal obligations.
  5. The Board identifies major risks for St John SA so they can be managed.
  6. Induction programs are in place for all new Board members.
  7. Board members regularly review their performance individually and as a Board.

The Board Chair is accountable for these standards.

Regulatory and Legislative Environment

St John SA operates within the highly regulated not-for-profit, healthcare, aged care, education and training sectors. We adhere to the relevant codes of practice, laws and licence agreements that govern these environments, and continually monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards.

St John SA is a company limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act 2001 and is a registered charity. We are also registered as a Public Benevolent Institution and hold Deductible Gift Recipient and Income Tax Exempt Charity status. Our work is guided by the Royal Charter of the Order of St John.

We deliver nationally recognised training and assessment on behalf of St John Ambulance Australia (RTO 88041), within the vocational education and training sector. Our first aid kits and equipment meet applicable Therapeutic Goods Administration and workplace safety requirements. Our healthcare professionals follow the relevant registration standards, and other healthcare workers follow the applicable Code of Conduct.

Our aged care services are guided by the Aged Care Quality Standards, which focus on the outcomes, care and services people can expect from organisations providing Commonwealth subsidised aged care services.
