AED laws are changing in South Australia – are you ready?
What is an AED?

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator (also commonly referred to as a defibrillator or defib) and is a portable medical device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. It analyses the heart rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help restore a normal heartbeat.
AEDs are designed for anyone to use, even without training. They provide clear visual and voice prompts to guide you through the process step-by-step.
What is the legislation?

In South Australia, new laws have been introduced to make AEDs mandatory in certain buildings, facilities and vehicles to create safer spaces for all South Australians. The aim is to improve survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest by increasing public access to AEDs.
Around 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in Australia, and shockingly, only 1 in 10 survive. These laws will help to change that.
When does it apply?

The legislation is already in place, however it will be governed, regulated and enforced from:
- 1st January 2025 – State/Local Government and Crown owned buildings, facilities, emergency services vehicles
- 1st January 2026 – private sector, commercial business and other defined buildings/facilities
The maximum penalty for non-compliance is $20,000.
Who does this apply to?
Owners/operators of the following must comply:
- Commercial spaces: Buildings ≥600m² (e.g. offices, shopping centres)
- Educational facilities: Schools, childcare, universities
- Recreational facilities: Sporting venues, public pools
- Residential areas: Apartment blocks, retirement villages, caravan parks
- Gambling & entertainment: Casinos, theatres, etc
- Public transport: Trains, trams, buses
- Others: Correctional institutions, aged care homes, places of worship
Please refer to the legislation for a full list of those required to install AEDs.
