National Volunteer Week 2019

National Volunteer Week 2019

20 May 2019

St John Ambulance SA is celebrating its almost 2000-strong team of volunteers this National Volunteer Week, which runs from 20-26 May 2019. The week is all about celebrating volunteers and the incredible contribution they make to communities.

St John volunteers can be seen at events nearly every day of the year, providing first aid services to the public. Whether the event be a local sporting match or farmers’ market to the Superloop Adelaide 500 and Tour Down Under, St John volunteers are always there to care for others.

Less visible to the public eye, without a uniform and helping in private settings, Community Care volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of hundreds of clients, providing reablement-focused support and helping to reduce social isolation amongst vulnerable populations. Additionally, a group of dedicated Historical Society volunteers open the St John Ambulance SA Museum three days a week, showcasing 135 years of history.

National Volunteer Week is a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to celebrate the generosity of volunteers and the impact they have on the lives of so many people.

St John Ambulance SA has countless examples of dedicated volunteers who go above and beyond to make a difference in their local community. One such volunteer is Alecia Sheedy, who hails from Mount Gambier and has recently made the move to Adelaide.

Alecia’s volunteering experience with St John Ambulance began when she was just eight years old, as a result of being inspired by her father’s volunteer experience with the SES.

“I tried dancing and Scouts and didn’t feel like it was my place. My dad decided to take me along to St John Cadets and I quickly made friends, was able to engage in first aid and found a passion for all the amazing things the organisation does”, Alecia said.

With an impressive record of achievements, badges and medals collected over the years, some of her standout achievements include being awarded State Youth Leader of the Year and Bendigo Bank Young Leader of the Year in 2017, the 2018 National Norma Bell Youth Leader Award, and she was recently announced as a finalist for the Santos Regional Service Award as part of the Seven News Young Achiever Awards.

“The opportunities are endless with St John. I am so fortunate to be able to give back to my community in the way I do and it is honestly the most rewarding feeling”, she said.

Without our team of dedicated volunteers, the work of St John Ambulance simply would not be possible. We cannot thank our volunteers enough for the outstanding work they do in the community.
